The role of a top laner in a League of legends can be a rather isolated one. You are rather far from the rest of your teammates on the map. Therefore you are less likely to be the target of a roam. On the rare occasion you do get a visitor it is more often than not an opponent. One way of surviving such attention is to pick a powerful early game bruiser that can potentially take and win outnumbered situations.
Today we will be giving you a rundown of one of the game's oldest bruisers in Renekton, who despite his age still finds a place in the meta. Let's take a look at what you will need to know to start playing the Butcher of the sands.
Renekton's Abilities
Passive: Reign of Anger
Renekton generates 5 Fury each time he lands a basic attack on an enemy and loses 4 Fury per second if he hasn't dealt or taken damage in the last 12 seconds.
When at or above 50 Fury, Renekton's next basic ability consumes 50 Fury to enhance its effects. The enhanced ability does not generate Fury.
Renekton generates 50% bonus Fury from all sources while below 50% of his maximum health
Q: Cull the Meek
Renekton deals physical damage to all nearby enemies and heals himself for each enemy hit, up to a cap
Against champions, the healing is increased by 300%
Renekton generates 2.5 Fury for each non-champion hit and 10 Fury for each champion hit, with the Fury generated per cast capped at 30.
When empowered by reign of anger Cull the Meek deals additional damage, increases the total healing by 200%, and the healing cap by 300%.
Renekton cannot basic attack nor cast Slice Slice, Dice Dice, or Dominus Dominus for 0.25 seconds after Cull the Meek's activation.
W: Ruthless Predator
Renekton enhances his cleaver, causing his next basic attack within 7 seconds to have a 0.25-second cast time, gain 50 bonus range and strike his target twice, dealing modified physical damage and stunning them for 0.75 seconds. Each slash applies on-hit effects at 100% effectiveness and grants Fury. Striking an enemy champion grants 10 bonus Fury.
When empowered by reign of anger Renekton instead strikes 3 times, completely destroying damage-mitigating shields on the target upon the first strike before dealing 50% bonus damage, as well as increasing the stun duration to 1.5 seconds.
Ruthless Predator resets Renekton's basic attack timer.
Renekton cannot cast Cull the Meek, Slice Slice, nor Dice Dice during Ruthless Predator's windup.
E: Slice and dice
When empowered by reign of anger Dice deals additional damage to all enemies and reduces their armor for 4 seconds.
R: Dominus
Renekton empowers himself for 15 seconds, gaining bonus health, 20% increased size, 25 bonus range, and 20 Fury.
For the duration, he deals magic damage every 0.5 seconds to all nearby enemies and generates 5 Fury per second, up to a maximum of 75 Fury.
The most common skill path is to take Q at level one, level two take E, level three take W and level six take R. You ideally should max Q followed by E then finally W putting a point in R whenever possible
Renekton's Build
Renekton's mythic does vary depending on the opponent. He tends to go either Goredrinker to ensure he can easily out trade them with the bonus health and attack damage it provides. Its active which provides waveclear and on-hit healing is also nice in both team fights and split push situations. Into ranged opponents, he more often takes prowler's claw. While it doesn't provide health, its dash and lethality are more useful for the ranged opponents who tend to be a lot easier to kill once caught out. This is due to the fact that they will most likely not be stacking defensive items.
From here on out he tends to pick up a Sterak's gage for extra health and a shield. The next items can be situational. He may opt into a gargoyle's stoneplate for yet another shield, a guardian angel for an extra life. A death's dance against attack damage heavy teams or a spirit visage for those with more magic damage.
His boots are usually either plated steel caps or mercury treads depending on whether or not the enemies have powerful crowd control abilities.
Renekton's Runes
Renekton's rune setup is ideal for a melee top laner that ones to bully his way to the top. Conqueror to ensure you get stronger the longer your duels take. Triumph and alacrity reward you for takedowns whilst Last Stand is good as you heal more with your Q depending on how low you are. Alacrity and Last stand may be swapped for Tenacity and Coup de grace depending on the matchup. Second wind to allow you to heal post trades and demolish to help you secure objectives.
For the minor runes, run two adaptive forces and either resistance rune depending on enemy composition.
Final Thoughts
Renekton may be an old croc but he can definitely keep up with the fresher champions despite all their new tricks. If you are looking for a lane bully that has stood the test of time maybe consider picking him up. While you may still struggle with potentially falling off the longer the game goes. However, if played well and earn a big enough advantage you may be able to take on 2 or even 3 opponents at once.
