The Witcher: Monster Slayer is a location-based augmented-reality role-playing game set "long before the time of Geralt of Rivia." Players assume control of a witcher who is tasked to vanquish the foul creatures roaming the lands of the Continent. The game features AR exploration, much like the popular AR mobile game Pokemon GO.
While the game is still in its pre-release state, developers Spokko (a CD Projekt Red subsidiary) have just released update 0.9.0 on their Facebook page. The patch notes are as follows.
The Witcher: Monster Slayer Update 0.9.0 Patch Notes
Main highlights:
– When players are using auto-equip on monsters with one or more "skulls" and they don't have recommended gear, they will receive a special offer to buy them.
– Increased damage of all bombs.
– Increased effect of all oils.
– Increased difficulty of monsters with one "skull".
– Swallow additionally regenerates the player's vitality between series of battles (for example in nemeta).
– Killing monsters during the first 15 seconds of the fight generates extra XP.
– After finishing the tutorial, the NPC that starts the first quest appears near the player.
Along with the announcement of the update patch, the update post also stated that the details on the Android soft-launch will be shared soon.
The game was announced in mid-2020, with the following statement from CD Projekt Red regarding the gameplay.
"Featuring console-grade visuals, Monster Slayer lets players explore the world around them while tracking, studying, and fighting monsters both new and familiar, using time of day and real-life weather conditions to gain the upper hand. Preparation is key in order to defeat tougher enemies, as players will need to brew powerful potions and oils, craft bombs and monster bait, and upgrade their character before putting these beasts to the sword and signs in first-person AR combat. In addition to battling monsters lurking close-by, the game also contains rich, story-driven quests inspired by other games from the series, taking players on full-fledged adventures that thrust them into the heart of what it means to be a professional monster slayer."
While the release dates were originally slated to be announced last year, they were ultimately deferred. However, following this update, it seems like we're not too far off from being able to play this game for ourselves.
The Witcher: Monster Slayer Countries Availability
Currently, the game is only available as a test version on iOS in Russia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and New Zealand. You can get it here. Along with the test version, a daily contract reward system was also introduced to the game in the previous (0.8.0) patch. This enables players to fulfill contracts and collect rewards on a daily basis.
A gameplay preview can be seen here. Several monsters that are regularly seen in the games such as the Pale Fleder, Shaelmaar, Leshen, Alp, Griffin, Uodnik, Werewolf, Basilisk, Night Succubus, Alghoul, Foglet, and Succubus are confirmed to be part of the game's sizeable monster roster. At a glance, it seems that sword customizations will also play a key role.
